The Last Suppers by Mandy Mikulencak There are some stories that really stick with you even after you set them down. The Last Suppers by Texas A&M University graduate Mandy Mikulencak is one of those stories. Mikulencak’s novel tells a poignant tale of a prison cook, Ginny, who (among other duties) prepares a “last supper” for inmates on death row right before they go to the electric chair. Ginny’s compassion and need to serve these inmates come in part from her personal history. Her daddy was killed when Ginny was a young girl, and the killer’s execution still haunts her. She also struggles in her personal relationship with the prison warden, who was her father’s best friend. As the book unfolds, so do secrets from her past, and she must decide how to move forward with the information she uncovers.
Set in the 1950s, Mikulencak not only captures the spirit of Ginny, but paints a picture of a broken prison system. The emotional depth of the book and immaculate character development is sure to have readers hooked into the world of Ginny and the last suppers.
The Last Suppers is available in hardcover, paperback, ebook, or audiobook.
