On Tuesday, May 16 at 7pm, George Bush Presidential Library and Museum welcomes Henry Chappell and Wyman Meinze to the Orientation Theater located in the museum. They will lead a discussion on their book “Horses to Ride, Cattle to Cut.”
The book focuses on the rich history and unique ecosystem of the San Antonio Viejo Ranch in the Wild Horse Desert of South Texas. Over the course of three years, photographer Wyman Meinzer captured the 150,000-acre ranch in all seasons and weather conditions, resulting in beautiful panoramas and still moments of cowboys in the midst of their work. Author Henry Chappell writes with a deep understanding of the land and its history, giving a unique look into the lives of the workers and families involved with the San Antonio Viejo Ranch.
When Tom Timmons East Sr. and Alice Gertrudis Kleberg, of King Ranch, married in February 1915 this began “the modern era of San Antonio Viejo.” Currently, the family holdings operate as The East Foundation which consists of a working ranch and living research laboratory. Through illuminating words and photographs, “Horses to Ride, Cattle to Cut” embodies the legacy of the East family and serves as a moving tribute to one of the most storied ranches in the state of Texas.
The event is free, but seating is limited and reservations are recommended. A reception and book sale and signing will follow.
