September is National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. During this month of awareness and memorial, Adam’s Angels Ministry is at the forefront of the childhood cancer battle.
Founded by Donna and Tim Culliver, Adam’s Angels Ministry provides care and comfort through physical, emotional, financial, and spiritual support to those crusading against childhood cancer.
On January 16, 2003, the Cullivers’ son, Adam, woke up from an afternoon nap complaining of a headache and unable to see. Rushed to the emergency room, Adam’s blood work revealed an exceedingly high white blood cell count. Adam was diagnosed with leukemia and taken to Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston. His condition continued to worsen and Adam passed away on January 20, 2003. Inspired by the generous amounts of support from the Brenham community, Donna recognized the need to help others fighting the same battle, says Alesia Whaley, event coordinator and family friend.
“It started by Donna just volunteering with families,” says Whaley. Then, in 2004, Adams Angels was founded. By sharing their experience and gathering resources, the Cullivers, through Adam’s Angels Ministry, provide support for affected families.
“Families have to be up at the hospital in a day’s notice,” says Whaley. “They don’t have time to pack or get everything settled.” Though the organization doesn’t cover medical bills or funeral costs, they help relieve daily struggles, such as fuel, parking, and utility bills, so families can focus on their child.
5K Dash & Butterfly Memorial Release Adam’s Angels will host their annual fundraiser, the 5K Dash, on October 3. Families and groups are encouraged to participate. Current Adam’s Angels families will be introduced at the race along with a live butterfly release commemorating and honoring families and children battling cancer. Tena Rae Helm’s song “Fly Butterfly” will accompany the butterfly release.
