You Saw Me on the Radio: Recollections and Favorite Calls as the Voice of Aggie Athletics by Dave South For Aggies everywhere, Dave South is just as much a celebrity as the athletes he talks about on the radio. I grew up in an Aggie family, so South’s voice was a very familiar presence. If we weren’t at home watching the Aggies on TV, dad was sure to pull it up on the radio. I can’t tell you how many times my mom would say, “It will be a sad day when Dave South retires.” Even though that day has finally come, his voice and his calls will forever be etched in every Aggie’s heart.
I’ll never forget sitting in church on a Wednesday, and I hear that oh-so-familiar voice behind me. I turn around looking to put a face to the voice I’ve heard my entire life—and he was NOTHING like I pictured! I share this story only because South shares a similar one in his book You Saw Me on the Radio. A similar encounter is where the book got its name.
His book is a great reflection on his career, with behind-the-scenes information, memorable stories, and some of his favorite calls. Not only does he share his love for Aggie sports and his long-lasting career, but his faith and Christ-centered life is weaved throughout the entire book. Additionally, all of South’s proceeds from the book benefit the Wounded Warrior Project. The Aggies may miss him on the radio, but this book is just another part of the legacy he has left behind.
You Saw Me on the Radio is available through the Texas A&M University Press.
