The Arts Council of Brazos Valley (ACBV) will continue its summer art class program through the beginning of August, including kids summer art camps and Saturday adult art classes. ACBV is beginning week six of camps and classes.
The kids summer art camps conclude this week with two topics. Art Around the World with Rose Santos will be held today through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to noon for children ages 6–11. The camp will explore art around the world focusing on famous artists, traditions, and cultures each day to create landscape paintings, sugar skulls, collages, and more. Children ages 6-11 can also attend Printmaking & Monster Pottery with Brandi Walden from 12:30–4 p.m. today through Friday. Participants can make a working whistle or sound monster for their phone using clay, then learn about the different ways to printmake.
On Saturday, July 17, adult art classes continue with Natural Science Illustration with Arienne Boley from 1:30–3:30 p.m. Natural science illustration combines the beauty of nature with the precision of scientific observation, and working in a traditional format, the class will create a poster from their study of unique natural objects through observation. The registration fee is $40. Paper Quilling with Apinya Srikhwanthong, the former Navasota Artist in Residence, will be held Saturday, July 24 from 1–4 p.m. This adult art class will teach basic shapes of quilling and how to roll, shape, and glue them together. Students will experiment with strips of paper and decorative designs. The class costs $35.
On Saturday, July 31 from 1-4 p.m., ACBV’s adult art class will be Color Me a Rainbow: Pastel Portraits with Jami Bevans. In this $40 class, Jami Bevans will show participants how to use all the colors in the rainbow as an underpainting of pastels to create more realistic skin tones. Students practice first on gray bogus paper to get the idea then transfer knowledge to creating their own portraits. Everyone is encouraged to bring a printed photo of themselves, a friend, or a family member.
The summer adult art classes will conclude on Saturday, August 7 with Bookbinding with Lisa Urban from 1–4 p.m. In this class, students design their own covers and learn two basic bookbinding techniques: Japanese stab binding and coptic binding. Students will walk away with a small journal and a large sketchbook. The registration fee is $45.
