The Theatre Company will present Gypsy, the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical made famous by Ethel Merman in the late 1950s, beginning June 15. Roughly based on the memoirs of Gypsy Rose Lee, the musical centers around her domineering mother, Rose, whose ultimate dream is to turn her two daughters into show-business stars.
The production will open Friday night at the Theatre Company location in the Tejas Center in Bryan and will run for two weekends. Performances are Friday through Sunday, June 15-17, and June 22-24. Scheduled times are: Fridays 7 p.m.; Saturdays 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.; and Sundays at
Gypsy starts Friday, June 15, at 7pm and will run until Sunday, June 24. 2 p.m.
The musical features Mama Rose, who is regarded as the pinnacle of all diva roles in musical theater and has been played by stars such as Ethel Merman, Tyne Daly, and Patti LuPone. Revival versions of Gypsy have acquired 16 Tony Awards, and Barbara Streisand is scheduled to play the role of Mama Rose in an upcoming movie version set for release in late 2013 or early 2014. Mama Rose is played by Cesara Beeler Walters in the Theatre Company production, which is directed by Randy Wilson.
