The Blinn College Theatre Arts Program will kick off its 2015-16 season with a story about six southern women who are delicate as magnolias, but tough as steel, in “Steel Magnolias.”
“Steel Magnolias” was suggested by Technical Theatre Arts Director Kevin Patrick as a way to start off the school year theme of “A Totally Awesome 80s Year.”
Truvy’s in-home beauty parlor is where the women usually gather for “Steel Magnolias” in Louisiana. The play covers a series of events over two and a half years, including one character’s Type 1 Diabetes diagnosis.
“It’s a great play that shows the strong bond between six women from Louisiana,” said Bradley Nies, theatre director.
Faculty members Karin Dahmann, Yvette Janecek, Jill Stewart, and Jennifer Patrick will perform in the play, as will former student Katie Cross, and community volunteer Kara Freeman.
The crew includes students Brian Francis (Altair), Alex Joshi (McKinney), Ansley Maddox (Navasota), Cristian Mejia (Burton), and Cierra Mertink (Burton).
The curtain rises at 7:00pm September 3-5 and 2:00pm on September 6 at the Dr. W.W. O’Donnell Performing Arts Center (map).
