Meet by the water fountain outside the Chemistry Building at 11:45am, to join the group heading to the glass studio, which can be difficult to find.
That’s right—Forsyth Brown Bag Lunch & Lecture will be taking a Field Trip Thursday, March 21st, to the Chemistry Building to see a live demonstration of Lampworking (also known as flameworking or torchworking).
Bill Merka, Senior Glass Blower at the Texas A&M Scientific Glass Blowing Shop, will give a demonstration of shaping and repairing glass, as well as a discussion of the science, chemistry and art of creating glassworks. The shop produces glassware for many of the research laboratories on campus. Bill has worked in the shop for 30 years. The scientific glass blowing shop is available to fabricate custom glassware of all types. Additional capabilities include glass lathe work, glass-to-metal seals, and silvering. The department also maintains an electronics shop for the maintenance and repair of all types of laboratory electronic instrumentation. This presentation will allow guests to view functional glass, as well as some artistic pieces designed and created by Merka.
Merka will be taking questions afterward, and there will be a discussion about the functionality and decorative design of glass.
