The Brazos Valley Museum of Natural History will be participating in BioBlitz, on Friday, April 26, and Saturday, April 27. This two-day event held at Lick Creek Park is free to the public and begins Friday night 6pm until 9pm, with attendees participating in various nighttime activities. The event continues with booths open all day Saturday from 10am to 4pm. Activities participants can enjoy include lectures, a butterfly tent, solar viewing sessions, guided nature hikes, and more.
Organized by the Society of Conservation Biology (Texas A&M University), the event includes booths with kid-friendly activities that the whole family will enjoy. The Brazos Valley Museum of Natural History will have its own booth with live animals, both native and nonnative, a fossil/fossil replica match challenge, and a Test Your Texas Wildlife Knowledge activity board. Other organizations such as the Friends of Lick Creek Park, the Rio Brazos Audubon Society, the Wildlife Society (Texas A&M), the Entomology Club (Texas A&M), and the Brazos Chapter of the Texas Master Naturalists will be hosting fun and informative natural history activities.
During BioBlitz, anyone from a budding scientist to an experienced naturalist is invited to join local biologists on a team to conduct a survey of Lick Creek Park and count as many different species native to the park as they can. The purpose of BioBlitz is to highlight the importance of urban green spaces to biodiversity and to the overall health of our local environment.
Lick Creek Park is a unique treasure of the Brazos Valley. This 515-acre park is home to an abundance of wildlife, including species of butterflies, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and mammals that are difficult to find elsewhere. Lick Creek Park is also an important archeological site and provides historical information about how Native Americans and early settlers used the Brazos Valley.
