The Navasota Theatre Alliance presents for its sixth year, the popular nighttime history program Lanterns & Legends at the Oakland Cemetery at 801 Sixth Street, Navasota. This year's theme is Carved in Stone and explores some of the fascinating mysteries to be found on cemetery monuments and markers. The event will be held on Oct. 25, 26, and 27 with tours starting at 6:45pm through 7:45pm. A indoors version will be held on Sunday, Oct. 28, at 2pm at the Theatre.
Enjoy a night-time walking tour, presented by the Navasota Theatre Alliance, a nonprofit organization, in partnership with the City of Navasota. As you stroll through the historic Navasota Oakland Cemetery by lantern light, your guide will provide local history notes and you'll meet actors portraying historical figures, who are now resting in peace. If it weren’t for their grave markers, most of them would be forgotten by now – Only their tombstones tell us their names and vital statistics. Examine the connection between two pioneering clergymen and also the biographical notes on one monument and how it's tied to very different people. Listen in on a chat with two German immigrants as they talk about about The Knight of Pythias. Learn about one of the first burials in the Hebrew Cemetery of Navasota and the story behind the monument for a young African-American women who died at age 20.
“Each year, the stories are new but the format remains the same,” says Mavis Anderson, Lanterns & Legends NTA board member. “The scripted tours are every 15 minutes. The event presents grave sites, where costumed actors portray the actual people buried there.”
The Indoor version of Lanterns & Legends will be held on Sunday, Oct. 28, at 2pm for those who have difficulty walking on uneven terrain or have trouble seeing at night. This special one-time indoors presentation will be held at 104 W. Washington Ave. in Navasota. Seating is limited.
Tickets are $10 per person and are available on the Theatre's website at www.navasotatheatre.org or by calling (936) 825-3195. Tickets are also available at the cemetery on the nights of performances but typically sell out, so advance reservations are recommended.
