The Brazos Valley Museum of Natural History announces Summer Nature Camp 2015 from June 8 – August 21, Monday– Friday, 9am– 3pm. The only natural history museum in a hundred mile radius, the summer nature camp program spans more than 50 years. Utilizing non-traditional teaching techniques, museum artifacts & art, and fun-filled interactive activities, experienced teachers create customized plans for each day, corresponding to weekly themes. This year’s themes include: Engineering for Kids; Amazing Animals; Mummy Mysteries; Stars and Stripes; Aquatic Adventures; Once Upon a Time; Dinosaurs and More; Rainforests; Space Exploration; and Island Life.
Online registration is available this year. Priority member registration began April 7 and open registration begins May 5. Spots fill up quickly and registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. Parents can register their children (ages 4-12) for one week or for the whole summer.
Studying science and history helps children know and understand the world around them. The Museum offers children this opportunity in a safe, fun, and interdisciplinary educational setting. Facilities include classroom areas, a Discovery Room, Museum galleries, and a 40-acre park, all used to enhance children’s learning experience. To ensure personalized instruction, classes are grouped by age and kept small, with a teacher to student ratio of 1:10.
Weekly themes allow campers to explore the world in a variety of ways. Engineering For Kids teaches the basics of engineering. Amazing Animals reveals facts about our strangest creatures. Campers can learn how mummies are formed, and what they tell us in Mummy Mysteries. Stars & Stripes tells the stories of America and the Lone Star State’s past. Aquatic Adventures dives into facts about water and animals that call it home.
Campers will be transported to ancient times of the Vikings, the Middle Ages and more in Once Upon a Time. Dinosaurs and More digs up the dirt on prehistoric creatures. Rainforests! highlights the fauna and flora of these unique habitats. Children will investigate ancient astronomy to modern day marvels of the universe in Space Exploration. Island Life is the Summer Extension Day Camp, allowing the additional option of day-by-day registration. The different days of the week will focus on Greenland, the Galapagos Islands, New Zealand, the Bahamas, and the Hawaiian Islands.
