World records, competitive eating, Texas two-stepping, BBQ Cook-Offs and pie contests, major car and motorbike shows, and music will all be part of the excitement and fun at the Spirit of Texas Festival, March 2-5, at Wolf Pen Creek Park. Up to 65,000 people are expected to attend the free, four-day extravaganza packed with competitions, food, and activities for the entire family.
Headlining the festival will be Brazos Valley’s attempt to set the Guinness World Record for the world’s largest serving of chili – more than 5,000 pounds of the Texas State food. Currently, the Guinness World Record is held by North Dakota. The event will be sanctioned by the Guinness Book of World Records and a Guinness Adjudicator will be onsite to bring the record back to Texas where it belongs. And who will eat all that chili? Spirit of Texas Festival goers, of course. Everyone will have the opportunity to be part of history, along with a group of professional competitors – Major League Eaters – some of the same guys and gals who eat hot dogs at Coney Island on July 4th each year. They will be devouring their way to $5,000 in cash and prizes at the event officially sanctioned by the International Federation of Competitive Eating. Next, a record-setting Frito pie will be created for everyone to enjoy.
Another Guinness World Record attempt will require at least 2,000 boot-scooting enthusiasts to create the largest Texas Two-Step dance, led by Brazos Valley’s very own Lil’ Wranglers and Elite Wranglers. BBQ grillers will compete for $10,000 in prizes in one of the state’s largest BBQ cook-offs, sanctioned by the International Barbeque Cookers Association. Food truck chefs will vie for $10,000 in the Spirit of Texas Curbside Smack Down. Girl Scouts will celebrate their 105th anniversary at Spirit of Texas Festival. Everyone is invited to dust off their momma’s best recipes for a pie-baking contest with $5,000 in prizes. Gearheads will show their best cars and motorbikes in a competition for $10,000 in cash and prizes. Additionally, a variety of other contests, displays, demonstrations, markets, and learning opportunities will delight visitors of all ages and interests.
