United Way of the Brazos Valley and Women United will be hosting the Second Annual Jingle Book Bash, a free book giveaway, the last three Saturdays before Christmas, Dec. 8, 15, and 22. One of the Bold Goals of United Way of the Brazos Valley is to prepare children, teens, and young adults for career achievement through educational success. The goal of the Jingle Book Bash is to encourage the love of reading and provide access to books during the holiday season. Jingle Book Bash will be located in the JC Penney Court at the Post Oak Mall.
“When families read together, children are poised for better success in school. Creating excitement and joy around choosing a book and reading for fun is the foundation of Jingle Book Bash,” says VP Community Impact of United Way of the Brazos Valley Peggi Goss.
Join United Way while your child picks their own free book to take home with them. The selection is appropriate for babies, toddlers, children, and teens. There will be a reading area so children can read while they wait their turn with Santa Claus. Local celebrities are also scheduled to appear throughout the event, including H-E-Buddy, KaBoom, and Sawyer the Scotty's House Facility Dog.
“At United Way, we believe books should never be a luxury for a child,” states President and CEO of United
Way of the Brazos Valley Alison Prince. “As a mother to an active five-year-old boy, I know firsthand how much a child gains when they read. A holiday book giveaway is our way of encouraging a love of reading and providing access to books.”
Two-thirds of children living in poverty grow up with no books at home. Studies show that the number of books in the home is directly linked to reading achievement. Children who grow up with access to books in their homes reach a higher level of education. United Way of the Brazos Valley is tackling this issue to support early literacy for all children, as part of the organization’s 2020 Regional Bold Goals.
United Way of the Brazos Valley fights for the health, education, and financial stability of every person in the Brazos Valley. They strengthen the community by identifying issues facing the Brazos Valley, engaging individuals to build strategies, and mobilizing resources to invest for change. United Way invests through Community Impact Grants to local nonprofit organizations and Investment Initiatives including 2-1-1 Texas, Youth Leadership Cabinet, Baby Bundles, and the Financial Stability Innovation Fund.
