TEXAS A&M UNIVERSITY’S Head Women’s Basketball Coach Gary Blair began working with the Special Olympics in 1992 after presenting basketball medals to the participating kids. “It was love at first sight,” remarks Blair who fondly remembers the joy and excitement in the kids’ eyes as he presented their medals. The kids’ joy in accomplishment, whether first or sixth place, was infectious and Blair decided to stay involved.
Special Olympics Texas hosts more than 300 competitions annually for more than 25,000 athletes. The organization aims to provide sports and athletic training for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Special Olympics further provides opportunities to share skills, gifts and friendship with families, other athletes and the community.
Coach Blair’s charities have raised approximately $870,000 in the last decade for the Special Olympics and other charities. Blair aims to reach the million-dollar mark with this year’s golf classic and auction.
The Classic will be a scramble format with four players plus a celebrity player and consist of morning and afternoon flights. Prizes will be given for hole-in-one, casino hole and closest to pin. Celebrities will include coaches and athletes from Texas A&M, various women’s basketball coaches from across the country, as well as local celebrities. Past celebrities have included ZZ Top drummer Frank Beard, baseball all-star Wally Moon, and former Texas A&M football coach R.C. Slocum.
Corporate sponsorships are still available at gold ($5000), silver ($2,500) and bronze ($1,500) levels. Teams of four can sign up for $1,000 and individuals for $250. All golfers are invited to attend the Celebration Dinner and Silent/Live Auction with a guest. Non-golfers are welcome to attend the Celebration Dinner and Silent/Live auction for $10.
