Embarking on a weight loss journey is often a daunting task, with generic gym memberships and overwhelming programs that often fall short of their promises. Without the right guidance and knowledge, fitness goals can seem unattainable. However, in College Station, there is a gym that is redefining the weight loss narrative, offering a comprehensive approach to wellness that can lead to a complete transformation.
Real Wellness MD and Fit Body Boot Camp is a gym with several onsite services, including personal training, nutrition planning and program options for any ability level. The owner and founder, Dr. Kuy Houser, practiced family medicine in the Bryan/College Station area for over 10 years before opening his gym in 2018. He became Obesity Medical Board Certified and continued learning the science of sustainable fat loss and honed his expertise toward understanding true body transformation and how health goes far beyond exercise.
“We wanted to redefine healthcare with our mission,” Fit Body Coach Jordan Engel says. “And we realized pretty quickly that knowing what to do [in the gym] is really a pretty small percentage of the equation.”
Kuy originally designed the weight loss programs with three pillars: fitness, nutrition and coaching. This structure allowed him to channel his medical expertise into action rather than attempting to explain a multi-faceted fitness approach during brief doctor appointments. Coaching accountability check-ins were also implemented to maintain communication and foster motivation with clients, and in turn, the community at Real Wellness MD and Fit Body strengthened.
“It’s very easy to get that gym membership and then it just hangs out on your key tag,” Jordan says. “It’s a cycle. You go to the gym a few times at the beginning of the year, then you don’t use it for two or three months. The cycle continues throughout the year and by next January you’re setting the same fitness goals as the previous year because no one is on the fitness journey with you.”
With the strong sense of community as an added bonus, what fundamentally sets apart Fit Body from countless other weight loss programs is accessibility and efficiency. Jordan says the root issue they see causing people to fall short of fitness goals is lack of time. The gym tackles this issue head- on with quick, 30-minute high-intensity interval training workouts, recommended three times per week. All workout times during the week are also flexible to fit your schedule, Jordan explains.
“The workouts are programmed ahead of time by our team,” Jordan says. “A coach will be there to not only tell you exactly what to do, but they’re also going to continue to form correct you to make sure that you’re getting a safe and effective workout. So all you really have to do is show up.”
While Fit Body’s workout community continued to grow significantly, Kuy knew that, while fitness is important, it is only one aspect of overall wellness. Kuy and his team knew they wanted to redefine healthcare, so they introduced another critical element to their weight loss programs by integrating services from the newly established sister company, Real Wellness MD, which opened in College Station in late 2018. Following the two-pronged approach of Fit Body’s fitness programs, the two companies began to blend together to offer a holistic set of tools for their clients to achieve full-body transformations.
“[Real Wellness MD] allowed [Kuy] to plug in with a team of health coaches who specialize in lifestyle health coaching,” Jordan recalls. “It’s very nutritionally focused. Over the years, we have worked together to expand our impact. Our clients who are doing our highest-level program, which we call a transformation program, are getting a weekly meeting with a health coach to analyze body composition changes over the last week. They also look over food logs, we’re at the point where we are doing blood and hair panels to pinpoint specifically what the client needs. Because, once again, telling people at mass what our owner found working in health care, didn’t do it for most people. They needed that extra level of coaching.”
With the new rollout of personal training sessions at Real Wellness MD and Fit Body Boot Camp, Jordan says that all of these highly customizable components are what truly push the needle for weight loss transformation. This is the redefined approach to healthcare that Kuy and his team have been striving for since they began their mission in 2018.
Success Story
Danielle Monk, who has been a valued client for over two years, has lost over 100 pounds through the coaching programs offered at Fit Body. Danielle, like many others, spent years exhausting every option for fitness and weight loss and couldn’t seem to find something that would click until this gym became her breakthrough.
“I went to a water park three-and-a-half years ago with my nieces and I literally could not make it up the stairs,” Danielle recalls. “It was a huge eye-opener for me. I was over 300 pounds at that time. When I got home, I told my sister-in-law that we’ve got to make a change.” Danielle and her sister stumbled upon a Facebook ad for Fit Body and quickly scheduled their consultation.
“I was a little worried, but Jordan believed in me before I even did,’” Danielle says, “He never looked at me as the overweight girl ... I never felt uncomfortable walking through the door at Fit Body. I always felt welcome and excited and motivated.”
Danielle has become one of the gym’s most recognized success stories and has inspired several coworkers, friends and family members to attend Fit Body with her. She has extensively grown her knowledge in all aspects of fitness and nutrition and is now able to lend a helping hand to everyone in her life with questions.
Through their shared fitness journeys, Danielle says that people of all backgrounds come together at Fit Body to create a diverse, fulfilling community where she has met some of her best friends.
“You have every type of person there, and we love each other all the same,” Danielle says. ‘I would have never pictured myself being best friends with some of the people I am now. They are truly the best people in my life. The coaches are also all so different, but they each bring a key factor and piece to that gym that is indescribable.”
“The outcomes are more than what you think from an exercise science viewpoint,” Jordan says. “Saying you were able to increase the depth of your squat by eight degrees, that doesn’t matter. What matters is ‘I was able to play with my kid longer. I can pick my grandkids up off the floor. I actually take pictures of myself now. I bought a tank top last week for the first time in 15 years.’ When people tell you that stuff every week, you look at it, and you’re like, I’m never leaving this place. There’s nothing better than this.”
