Architecture That Speaks: S. C. P. Vosper and Ten Remarkable Buildings at Texas A&M; By Nancy T. McCoy and David G. Woodcock. It’s no secret that the Texas A&M University campus is constantly evolving. Students and locals often joke, “Texas A&M University — under construction since 1871.” Be that as it may, the best-kept secret is the history behind some of the buildings that have stood the test of time. In Nancy T. McCoy and David G. Woodcock’s book Architecture That Speaks: S. C. P. Vosper and Ten Remarkable Buildings at Texas A&M, they recount the history and evolution of Vosper’s 10 buildings on campus.
Vosper joined the college architect’s staff in 1929 as chief designer and was responsible for designing some of the most detailed and intricate buildings on the Texas A&M campus. Architecture That Speaks provides an intimate look at the history and design of these buildings: The Chemistry Building; The Cushing Library; Hart Hall and Walton Hall; The Petroleum Engineering, Geology, and Engineering Experiment Station Building; The Veterinary Hospital; The Administration Building; The Agricultural Engineering Building; and The Animal Industries Building and Horse Barn.
You don’t need to be an architecture enthusiast or history buff to enjoy this book; the beautiful photos by Carolyn Brown tell a story of their own. Each building has a remarkable story. Architecture That Speaks will make you wish you could travel back in time to see these buildings in their prime. Luckily, they’ve been preserved on campus for all to experience and enjoy.
Architecture That Speaks is available through the Texas A&M University Press.
