Gathering Courage by T.A. McMullin
Terry McMullin has had what most people would consider a difficult life. The oft-quoted phrase “when life gives you lemons, make lemonade” could not be a more perfect description of McMullin’s life story, which plays out in the pages of her memoir, Gathering Courage: A Life-Changing Journey through Adoption, Adversity, and a Reading Disability.
Orphaned as a child, McMullin was adopted at a young age, but when her parents didn’t know how to handle her difficulties in school, she was sent to a foster home for a while. Through trial and perseverance, McMullin slowly found new ways to learn and eventually graduate school, despite the odds. She continued her education at Texas A&M University and set out to advocate for other students with disabilities of their own. McMullin’s long career has included working with dyslexic students (like herself) and visually impaired students, among others.
No matter what hard circumstance was thrown her way, McMullin never gave up. She continued to work hard and rely on her faith in God to see her through every situation. Her book not only speaks to these trials, but speaks boldly of her faith and perseverance. Packed with emotion, Gathering Courage is sure to leave you inspired.
