“A Coaching Life” By Gary Blair with Rusty Burson
In Bryan College Station, Coach Gary Blair is known to many as one of the best women’s basketball coaches in Texas A&M University history. While at Texas A&M, he has lead the team to multiple NCAA Tournament appearances, a Big 12 Conference Championship in 2007, an SEC Conference Championship in 2013, and a National Championship in 2011. His basketball coaching resume is quite impressive, but Coach Blair originally had a different career path in mind…a baseball coach.
In his new book, “A Coaching Life,” Coach Blair gives an account of his life starting with the young boy in Dallas who loved baseball to the Hall of Fame Coach at Texas A&M. In between, he takes readers along the journey with him beginning as a high school coach for South Oak Cliff High School in Dallas before moving into college ball at Louisiana Lafayette University, Stephen F. Austin University, Arkansas University, and, of course, Texas A&M. Throughout the book, Coach Blair provides insight into some of the memorable moments of his coaching career, but he also gives a brief history of women’s basketball. Blair describes in detail the sport’s evolution and dotes on some of the greatest coaches in women’s basketball. Through it all, he remains humble, giving credit where it is due. The book serves as a peek into an extraordinary life and an unforgettable career.
“A Coaching Life” is available in hardback through the Texas A&M University Press.
