During the month of October and coinciding with LGBT History Month, the College of Liberal Arts at Texas A&M University will be co-hosting a film series, reception, and lecture by noted filmmaker and social activist Dustin Lance Black.
The reception, which is open to the public, will be from 4:30pm to 6pm on October 14, at the newly acquired exhibit, Don Kelly Research Collection of Gay Literature and Culture, in the Cushing Memorial Library. RSVP is required.
Later that evening, Black will give a lecture titled, An Artist’s Journey: From Texas to Hollywood to the Steps of the Supreme Court, at 6:30pm in Rudder Theatre.
In the weeks leading up to Black’s visit, the college and the Film Studies Program will host a film series presenting three of Black’s honored films in Rudder Theatre. Virginia, written and directed by Black, will be shown on October 1; J. Edgar, written by Black and directed by Clint Eastwood, will be shown on October 7; and Milk, written by Black and directed by Gus Van Sant, will be shown October 12. All three films begin at 7pm and are open to the public.
Black has won the Academy Award® and two WGA Awards for Best Original Screenplay in 2009 for Milk, the biopic of the late civil rights activist Harvey Milk starring Sean Penn. He is also a founding board member of the American Foundation for Equal Rights (AFER), which successfully led the federal cases for marriage equality in California and Virginia, putting an end to California’s discriminatory Proposition 8. He is an honors graduate of UCLA’s School of Film and Television.
