It’s time to embrace masks as an expression of personal fashion. The Arts Council of Brazos Valley is launching a Face Mask Design Competition where artists, designers, and creatives of all types and ages will have the opportunity to design an original mask. Participation in the competition is free. From the practical to the outlandish, the Arts Council is curious to see what competitors are creating and want to share it with the world.
The submission deadline is Wednesday, Aug. 5, after which the entries will be judged by the Arts Council Gallery Committee. Winners will be announced on Monday, Aug. 10. Once winners are selected, they will be asked to recreate their design on a wooden mask, graciously provided to by Burr’s Unfinished Furniture. Winners will then have two weeks to complete the final version of their work on the provided mask. Following the mask competition, the piece will tour through several Arts Council community galleries with other winners. At the end of the touring period, efforts will be made to return the mask-erpiece to the creator.
In creating their design, participants must follow set guidelines. Masks can have any theme, but must be original and appropriate for all ages. The material and subject matter included on the mask should be original and must not be under the copyright of another artist or entity. Mediums that can be applied to a smooth wood surface are required. Mask designs must be stable enough to hang on a wall display.
A draft for mask designs will be drawn up for submission on a printed copy of the Arts Council's mask template file. After selection, creators will be asked to recreate their design on a provided mask.
In submitting their completed mask-erpiece design, participants should send a high resolution .jpeg or .heif file to info@acbv.org with “Arts Council Mask Competition'' in the subject line. In the body of the email, competitors should include their name and small description of the piece in 300 words or less.
