The Arts Council has announced the 2015 Twin City Properties Artist in Residence, Sebastian Kawar. Sebastian will spend the summer creating a new body of work to premier at a solo exhibition at The Arts Council’s Texas Gallery at the end of his residency. A recent graduate from The Department of Visualization at Texas A&M University, Sebastian’s motivation and desire to challenge himself makes him an ideal candidate for this program.
Having spent his last semester working on large paintings that focus on lighting, Sebastian plans to continue this series of “cinematic portraits.” These portraits involve applying the rules of cinematography and blending them with techniques that can only be used in painting. While not confining his creativity to these types of pieces, he has challenged himself to work within the constraints of wide aspect ratios to create compelling images.
The Twin City Properties Artist in Residence program will allow Sebastian to focus solely on his art, without the distractions that come with being a student. He will have the opportunity to develop his art through introspection and by mastering technical skills. Sebastian will also participate in mentorship sessions with local artists and business owners throughout the summer. These sessions will provide guidance and a glimpse into the everyday life of an independent artist, as well as information about marketing, finance, and exhibit promotion.
Sebastian will be blogging about his experience and current projects at sebastiankawar.tumblr.com. Follow The Arts Council on Facebook to keep up with Sebastian’s work.
