Blinn-Brenham Campus The Blinn College-Bryan campus Choral Union will explore the emotions evoked by the night during its upcoming Spring Concert.
“Music of the Night” begins at 7pm, Thursday, May 7, at First Presbyterian Church of Bryan, located at 1100 Carter Creek Parkway. Arrangements will include Mozart’s “Eine kleine Nachtmusik,”which translates to “A Little Night Music” and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Music of the Night,” made popular by the hit musical, “The Phantom of the Opera.” The performance is free and open to the public.
“The choir has truly set high standards of musical excellence,” says Chris Hoffman, choir director. “They are recognized in the community and consistently invited to perform with the Brazos Valley Symphony Orchestra and at an array of events. This concert is going to be another excellent performance you won’t want to miss.”
Mozart’s “Eine kleine Nachtmusik” was originally a serenade with a string orchestra, which the Bryan Choral Union will recreate using the human voice. The performance will have an international flavor as students sing “Ave Maria” from Sergey Rachmaninov’s “All-Night Vigil” in Russian and Johannes Brahms’ “Zigeunerlieder,” or “Gypsy Songs,” in German.
The concert will also feature an a cappella piece by up-and-coming composer Ola Gjeilo about the beauty—and sometimes terrifying beauty—of the Northern Lights. The evening will also include works from “The Secret Garden,” “The Lion King” and a medley from Broadway’s “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.”
“The choir is absolutely enthused to present this slate of compositions,” Hoffman said. “We’re performing at a lovely venue that is perfect for these choral arrangements. We hope the community will come show their support and enjoy the music.”
