Blinn College will close its 2017-18 Performing Arts Series with a performance by an award-winning a cappella group from Los Angeles.
m-pact will perform at the Dr. W.W. O’Donnell Performing Arts Center, located on the Blinn-Brenham Campus, at 7pm on Friday, April 13.
“m-pact will present a wide range of musical styles in an a cappella fashion that has had a rebirth within the last decade,” said Kevin Patrick, Blinn College technical theatre director. “They will sing songs from the early doo-wop period all the way up to the latest top-40 hits in their own arrangements.”
m-pact was hailed by the San Francisco Chronicle as “one of the best pop-jazz vocal groups in the world.” Their sophisticated sound and accessible appeal have garnered vast accolades, including Vocal Group of the Year at the Los Angeles Music Awards, Artist of the Year at the Seattle Music Awards, and Grand National Champs of the Harmony Sweepstakes competition. Respected worldwide as a cutting-edge trailblazer in vocal music, this sextet has cultivated a new generation of ears hungry for the raw power of nature’s first instrument – the human voice.
Touring renowned fine arts halls and jazz festivals across four continents, m-pact has performed alongside Sheryl Crow, Boyz II Men, Kenny G, Liza Minnelli, Rick Springfield, Ray Charles, and Natalie Cole. Over the last dozen years, their signature sound has been used in TV themes and animated Disney feature films, and is enjoyed on syndicated radio worldwide.
Prior to the performance, m-pact will host music and performance workshops for Blinn College vocal students, and the Blinn choir will join m-pact on stage for part of the show.
“We look forward to performing with m-pact,” said Paulo Gomes, Blinn College choir director.
As part of m-pact’s outreach effort, the group will bring its years of professional experience in the entertainment industry to the classroom. Workshop topics include arranging style and interpretation, sight reading, self-confidence, ensemble singing, vocal percussion, career development, mic technique, stage presence, song-writing, vocal health, recording techniques, music industry, music psychology, CD production, and finding one’s voice.
Prior to the concert, Blinn College will host a reception at 2:30pm in the MRW Studio Theatre located inside the O’Donnell Center.
Individual concert tickets are $30. Tickets are $15 for children ages 10 and under, and groups of 10 or more can buy tickets for $26 apiece. Blinn employees can purchase tickets for $20, and Blinn student rush tickets are $10. Seating is limited, so check availability in advance.
