The Brazos Valley Museum of Natural History, in cooperation with the National Endowment for the Humanities proudly presents House & Home, June 16 to Aug. 11. On Friday, June 16, the Museum invites the public to its FREE grand opening event, beginning at 6:30pm with a presentation by Professor Michael O’Brien. O’Brien, a professor in the Department of Architecture, Texas A&M University, is an award winning architect, and has been recognized for his outstanding research, including a co-curatorship with the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C. His fascinating talk will be followed by a reception and gallery viewing.
Nostalgic artifacts, photographs, domestic furnishings, building materials, film clips, and hands-on interactives on display give Museum visitors an overview of architecture styles and living patterns that have been featured in American homes over the years. Quotes, toys, and other graphic advertising materials prompt visitors to think about the different ideas embodied in the words “house” and “home.” The exhibition also showcases domestic objects–from cooking utensils to telephones–and traces how household goods tell the stories of our family traditions, heritage, and the activity of daily living. House & Home was made possible in part through Hotel Tax Revenue funded from the City of College Station & the City of Bryan through the Arts Council of Brazos Valley and by NEH on the Road, a special initiative of the National Endowment for the Humanities. It has been adapted and is being toured by Mid-America Arts Alliance. House & Home was curated by Sarah Leavitt, Ph.D., Curator, National Building Museum, Washington, D.C., and organized by the National Building Museum in partnership with Mid-American Arts Alliance, Kansas City, MO.
The Brazos Valley Museum of Natural History is open to visitors from Tuesday to Saturday, 10am-5pm. Admission fees: adults $5; seniors/students/children $4; children 3 and under are free.
