The Brazos Valley Symphony’s 31st season continues on Sunday, March 3, 2013 with the next classical subscription concert “Afternoon of Magic” led by Music Director & Conductor Marcelo Bussiki at Rudder Theatre on the Texas A&M University campus in College Station. The program features a collection of music that was either inspired by ballet, written for ballet, or eventually became a ballet. The evening will include impressionist composers, a soprano soloist, and a passionate Russian finale.
This concert, generously sponsored in part by Knowledge Based Systems, Inc, showcases an elegant arrangement of works from Debussy, Ravel, and Villa-Lobos. The evening’s production will conclude with The Firebird Suite from composer Igor Stravinsky.
Music Director Bussiki had a specific plan in mind when putting this concert together. “This program was built around works that were based on or inspired by distinct imagery or literary ideas, so it creates a musical atmosphere of something mythical, magical and ethereal. The final result is a program that is entertaining to audiences, but is also somewhat different from the other programs we have done recently, in that it is actually more musically traditional,” explained Bussiki.

Audiences will enjoy this story-inspired program and will be delighted to hear an up and coming local talent. Kaylie Kahlich, soprano, will perform an inspiring aria in one of Villa-Lobos’ Bachianas Brazileiras or “Brazilian Bach-like pieces”, where the composer sought to give Brazilian music some of the structural rigor of classical music. The tale told in this work will have Kahlich sing of the approaching evening, with her voice floating over a chorus of cellos.
“I am delighted to work again with Kaylie. It has been such a great pleasure to have her sing with us for the last two Holiday concerts. This time, we will have the opportunity to showcase her in a regular subscription concert performing one of the most beautiful works for voice and strings. The audience will have the opportunity to see a promising young soprano present a gorgeous piece of music and I am certain it will be a great success,” said Music Director Bussiki.
