The next highly anticipated live performance of the Brazos Valley Symphony Orchestra’s 35th season will take place Sunday, March 26, at 5pm in Rudder Theatre. CHI St. Joseph Health is the official sponsor of this “Positively WICKED” 2016-17 BVSO Season, and Eugene Edge III Charitable Trust is the March concert sponsor. Music Director Marcelo Bussiki and the BVSO will present a romantic evening of serenades from Elgar, Tchaikovsky, and two works from renowned Brazilian composer Heitor Villa- Lobos. In addition to Bachianas Brasileiras No. 9, Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5 will feature the bewitching lyric soprano Mela Dailey. “If you could take the golden tones out of sunshine, you have the loveliness of Dailey’s voice,” (Times Record News). Dailey is also part of the Grammy® award-winning choral ensemble, Conspirare. The concert will close with Tchaikovsky’s enchanting Serenade.

Maestro Bussiki conscientiously crafts each concert for our audiences. “I try to prepare a program with the same care as if I were a host of a dinner in my home. The balance in that entire evening is what I look for when preparing a program,” said Bussiki. “The Tchaikovsky and the Elgar were the start, but the special touch is those two Villa-Lobos works, they are not expected.”
The Bachianas Brasileiras consists of nine suites composed by Villa-Lobos that seek to adapt and interpret the Baroque works of J.S. Bach into a Brazilian folkloric framework. Bussiki continued, “Villa-Lobos is one of the greatest Brazilian composers, one that knows technically how to extract a lot from the orchestra, very unique in it’s language because it is a Brazilian nationalist language but at the same time, with a lot of European influence. People know the Bachianas No. 5 . . . that is the most well known of Villa-Lobos works. But that opened the possibility of doing a piece of Villa-Lobos’ that very few people know, which is the Bachianas No. 9, which will pair beautifully with the Bachianas No. 5.”
Mela Dailey performed with the BVSO in last season’s Brahms’ Requiem, and at that time Dailey had a casual conversation with Bussiki about wanting to perform the Villa-Lobos. Bussiki remembered, “I was quite impressed with Mela’s singing last year, and I wanted to work with her again.” So, the music program was then complete, including the perfect choice for a guest artist.

BVSO patrons can also enjoy free pre-concert talks one hour prior to each subscription performance in the Rudder Theatre Complex. Ann Thompson will again present her delightful and witty insights into the composers, the history, and meaning behind the music. Then after each subscription concert, a patron social hour at Napa Flats will keep the enjoyment going to top off an exquisite evening of music and entertainment. The Maestro and guest artist are scheduled to attend these socials as well!
