The Brazos Valley Symphony Orchestra continues its 36th season featuring “Tenors and Titans.” Music Director Marcelo Bussiki has planned the 2017-2018 subscription series to include five classical performances. The next concert will feature two titans of classical music: Mozart and Beethoven, as well as two of the most beloved compositions ever written. BVSO is proud to join forces once again with CHI St. Joseph Health as the official sponsor of their 2017-2018 season.
The next subscription concert will take place on Sunday, Nov. 19 at 5pm in Rudder Theatre at Texas A&M University. The second performance of the season, “Major Masterpieces” will feature Mozart’s instantly recognizable and intensely emotional Symphony No. 40, which is unquestionably one of the composer’s most admired works. The evening will close with one of Beethoven’s most celebrated works, Symphony No. 3 “Eroica.” Interestingly, in 2016, “Eroica” was named the greatest symphony of all time by BBC Music Magazine in a survey of 151 conductors working across the world.
“I think that audiences in general love both Beethoven and Mozart’s work because it is simply great music . . . Music that speaks directly to the audience in a genuine manner, each of them, in their own ways, with a touch of genius and craftsmanship,” said Bussiki. “Musicians love to perform these works because of the beauty and the diverse challenges that each one of them present. They are diametrically opposed in terms of demands: Mozart No. 40 requires an elegant, crystal touch, and formal clarity. While the Beethoven requires a balance between what I described for the Mozart, but with added outbursts and unexpected surprises.”
The BVSO’s theme for this year is Tenors and Titans due to the key elements of the season featuring composers considered to be the titans of classical music, as well as phenomenal guest artists. According to Mary Koeninger, symphony executive director, the stars of this show are the orchestra’s musicians and monumental works performed by the BVSO.
”Hearing these groundbreaking symphonies performed live is vastly different than a recording,” Koeninger says. “Your heart will swell, your feet will tap, and your experience will be amazing as well as indescribably enjoyable. It’s always best to get tickets in advance to insure you will have a seat for the concert.”
BVSO patrons can also enjoy free pre-concert talks one hour prior to each subscription performance in the Rudder Theatre Complex. Ann Thompson will again present her delightful and witty insights into the composers, the history, and meaning behind the music. Then after each subscription concert, a patron social hour at Napa Flats will keep the enjoyment going to top off an exquisite evening of music and entertainment. The Maestro is scheduled to attend these socials as well.
