This Giving Tuesday, United Way of the Brazos Valley will celebrate by spreading the love of reading. All donations made to United Way of the Brazos Valley on Giving Tuesday (Dec. 3) will go towards their Early Literacy Program which encourages the love of reading and provides access to books to children, teens, and young adults. United Way of the Brazos Valley’s Early Literacy Program includes Baby Bundles, which provides a free book to each new baby born in the Brazos Valley, and seasonal Book Bash free book giveaways.
Giving Tuesday is a global day of giving that harnesses the collective power of individuals, communities, and organizations to encourage philanthropy and to celebrate generosity worldwide. Following Thanksgiving and the widely recognized shopping events Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, and Cyber Monday, this year’s Giving Tuesday will take place on Dec. 3 and will kick off the giving season by inspiring people to collaborate and give back.
“Children have a huge learning capacity throughout their development. The Early Literacy Program encourages families to read together and explore the joys of sharing a story. These moments of learning and sharing position a child for future success,” states Peggi Goss, vice president of community impact at United Way of the Brazos Valley.
The next Early Literacy Program event, Jingle Book Bash, a free book giveaway, will be held on the first three Saturdays in December (Dec. 7, 14, and 22) from 10am to 3pm at Post Oak Mall. So far this year, the Book Bash has distributed more than 1,600 books to children. The selection is appropriate for babies, toddlers, children, and teens. There will be a reading area so children can read while they wait their turn with Santa Claus. The Post Oak Mall will also have a princess at each Jingle Book
Bash weekend from 11am to 1pm who will entertain children with story time, sing-a-longs, fun dances, and a meet and greet.
Two-thirds of children living in poverty grow up with no books at home. Studies show that the number of books in the home is directly linked to reading achievement. Children who grow up with access to books in their homes reach a higher level of education. United Way of the Brazos Valley is tackling this issue to support early literacy for all children, and you can join the cause by donating on Giving Tuesday at www.uwbv.org or by texting GiveUnitedBV to 41444.
