The Brazos Valley Symphony Orchestra leaps into the new decade with a special performance honoring the “classic of all classics," Beethoven, as the world observes his 250th birthday. Distinguished Music Director Marcelo Bussiki and the BVSO musicians come together with Kenny Broberg, current Cliburn Silver Medalist, to bring another outstanding performance to the community. They are grateful for the continued support of their official 2019-2020 season sponsor, CHI St. Joseph Health, whose generous contribution makes it possible for them to bring high-quality symphonic music to the Brazos Valley.
The Broberg & Beethoven concert takes the stage Sunday, Feb. 9, at 5pm in Rudder Theatre located on the Texas A&M University campus. Described as “strikingly imaginative,” Kenny Broberg is a well-decorated American pianist, having received a myriad of competition prizes internationally, including the prestigious Cliburn Silver Medal. Performing Beethoven’s beloved Symphony No. 6, the “Pastoral Symphony” is considered a musical expression of nature, representing the composer’s love for walks around the country. This piece incites cheerful feelings in its audience, leaving listeners in a joyful mood. Next, Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5, the “Emperor” will be interpreted by Broberg. Serving as the finale, the “Emperor” concerto represents Beethoven’s final and perhaps most brilliant work of its kind, known for its heroic spirit and bold melodies.
In 2020, orchestras around the world will assuredly be honoring the “German genius,” Beethoven, forhis 250th birthday—so Maestro Bussiki decided to bring together two of the composer’s masterpiecesto mark the occasion.
“The Pastoral Symphony or Symphony No. 6, is a remarkable portrait ofBeethoven’s love and respect for nature, a theme that could not be more contemporary for us all,” says Bussiki. “I paired that program with the ‘Emperor Concerto’ performed by the American pianistKenny Broberg. I had the privilege of watching Kenny’s final round performance at the Fifteenth VanCliburn International Piano Competition in June 2017 . . . he stood out to me as the most lyrical andrefined performer of the entire competition. So, I made the point of meeting him backstage andcommitting to a future performance,” continues the maestro.
“We are proud to celebrate Beethoven, a true titan of classical music, for the composer’s 250th birthdayby presenting an all-Beethoven
concert,” says Executive Director Mary Koeninger. “I am certain thatthe BVSO audience will be thrilled with this performance. Since this concert is in Rudder Theatre, seating will be limited and is sure to sell out so early ticket purchasing is highly recommended,”adds Keoninger.
BVSO patrons can also enjoy free pre-concert talks one hour prior to each subscription performancein the Rudder Theatre Complex. Ann Thompson will again present her delightful and witty insightsinto the composer, the history, and meaning behind the music. Then after the concerts in the RudderComplex, a patron social hour with the maestro at Napa Flats will keep the enjoyment going to topoff an exquisite evening of music and entertainment.
