Local jazz entertainer Greg Tivis and company will celebrate 10 years of First Sunday Jazz with a New Orleans type show packed with surprises and special guests from 6 to 9pm on Sunday, Dec. 1, at Luigi’s Patio Ristorante.
Originally known as the First Sunday Jazz Jam, this monthly jamboree has become a staple of the Bryan College Station music scene, and remains the longest-running regular recurring event of its kind in the area. Founded by Greg Tivis in 2009, First Sunday Jazz was originally conceived as a New Orleans’ themed jam session that offered area jazz and blues musicians an open invitation to showcase their talents on an off night to an audience that came strictly to hear the music. It was an instant success, and before long began drawing musicians and vocalists from all across the Brazos Valley.
Over time, First Sunday Jazz evolved into more of a production show. “While we are still open to musicians sitting in with the band, it’s more of an invitation only affair,” Tivis says, “maintaining a high quality musical experience and featuring well known special guests have been big factors in the continuing success of First Sunday Jazz, and our ability to consistently attract a large and faithful audience.” First Sunday Jazz consistently fills the restaurant to capacity, with many of the patrons maintaining standing reservations for their tables.
“Nowhere else in the Brazos Valley will you see a show of this quality, featuring some of the very best musicians and entertainers in our area, and there’s not even a cover charge to get in. People of all ages come to enjoy the music and the comradery of being part of our family of friends.” says Andres Tani, GM of Luigi’s Patio Ristorante.
The 10th anniversary First Sunday Jazz will include a variety of guest performers, as well as the Greg Tivis Jazz Band performing traditional New Orleans jazz and Christmas favorites. There will be door prizes and even a visit by ole St. Nick himself.
