Blinn College will open the 2017-18 Performing Arts Series with the Grammy Award-winning Asleep at the Wheel at the Dr. W.W. O’Donnell Performing Arts Center Sunday, Sept. 24, at 4pm.
“Texas knows Asleep at the Wheel,” said Kevin Patrick, Blinn College Technical Theatre Director. “It is more than just a concert – Ray Benson tells stories throughout about songs, other musicians, and life on the road.”
Asleep at the Wheel is an Austin-based band that brings a newfound energy and a unique country style to the stage. The band was founded by Benson 46 years ago and its highest charting single was “The Letter That Johnny Walker Read,” which peaked at No. 10 in 1975. In 1977, the band was voted Best Country Western Band by the Rolling Stone and was awarded the Touring Band of the Year by the Academy of Country Music.
Asleep at the Wheel has sold more than 1.5 million records, recorded 20 studio albums, posted 20 singles on the Billboard country charts, and won 10 Grammy Awards. The band has added Katie Shore as a vocalist and on the fiddle, Dennis Ludiker on the fiddle and mandolin, and Conner Forsyth as a vocalist and on the keyboard.
Prior to the concert, Blinn College will host a reception at 2:30pm in the MRW Studio Theatre.
Individual concert tickets are $30. Discounts are available for children ages 10 and under at $15, and groups of 10 or more can buy tickets for $26. Blinn employees can purchase tickets for $20, and Blinn student rush tickets are $10. Seating is limited, so please check availability in advance.
