“Our incredible 2019-20 ‘Tapestry’ lineup is full of eclectic Broadway offerings, world class musicians, and dynamic dramas that we cannot wait to share with our audiences.” OPAS Executive Director Anne Black states, “From classics like Fiddler on the Roof to recent hits like Beautiful and The Play That Goes Wrong, ticket buyers are truly in for a-list entertainment next season. Plus, we’re thrilled to also debut the national tour of the recent Broadway blockbuster Bandstand, which I know is going to be a hot ticket. But that’s not all! Our Intimate Gatherings and new Singular Sensations programs add up to fifteen entertaining programs! We hope this new season continues to weave together lasting memories.”
A team of community and Texas A&M student volunteers worked with Anne Black to select the performances on the 2019-20 season. This year’s committee was chaired by Loretta Foster and included Tracy Corrier, Paul Dyson, Mike Gentry, Andi Heath, Kevin Roach, Sally Godfrey, and students Stanzi Rowe, Jamie Loasby, and McKenzie Starnes.
The Ann Cobb Wiatt Main Stage will open with a groundbreaking Broadway spectacle featuring contortionists, jugglers, musicians, and extraordinary imagination in Cirque Dreams Jungle Fantasy (Sept. 17 and 18). This next program comes from three-time Tony® winner and Hamilton choreographer, Andy Blankenbuehler. OPAS presents an inspirational exploration of what American servicemen experienced coming home after World War II: Bandstand (Oct. 29 and 30, sponsored by Brookshire Brothers Charitable Foundation). Next up is Broadway and London’s award-winning smash comedy, the maniacal murder mystery The Play That Goes Wrong (Feb. 18 and 19). This next musical depicting iconic singer-songwriter Carole King’s rise to stardom and chart-topping success is Beautiful – The Carole King Musical (March 17 and 18, sponsored by Aggieland Credit Union). Two classic musicals that span multiple generations will close out the series—Fiddler on the Roof (March 31 and April 1, sponsored by Tom and Mary Kirk; McGregor) and RENT (April 20 and 22). All Main Stage events will be performed in Rudder Auditorium at Texas A&M. Main Stage season ticket packages for all six events start at $159, or patrons may “Pick Five” for as little as $138.
The very popular Intimate Gatherings series opens with help from stars of Walker, Texas Ranger and Dallas, Sheree J. Wilson and Clarence Hilyard in Driving Miss Daisy (Oct. 9). Christmas Bells Are Swingin’! With Boston Brass & Brass All-Stars Band is up next, filling in for the Little Drummer Boy with a jazzy, big-band, holiday sound (Dec. 5); Grammy® winners Steep Canyon Rangers sold out their hit OPAS concert back in 2011, and they’re back for one-night-only (Feb. 4). The next ensemble’s stylings have been called “effortless, stylistically varied, and beautifully blended,” by The Washington Post. Returning to Rudder for their third visit is The King’s Singers (Feb. 27). We’ll end the series by traveling back in time with the timeless and timely literary classic by George Orwell, Aquila Theatre’s 1984. Season tickets to all six events start at $180. The series is sponsored by Sonic, Comfort Keepers, and Jackie Voss, exclusive Allstate agent.
OPAS is proud to announce the brand-new series, Singular Sensations, featuring three great music offerings. The Four Italian Tenors (Oct. 17) kick-off the series with international flair, taking audiences on a trip to Italy as they salute some of their beautiful country’s greatest singers like Andrea Bocelli and Luciano Pavarotti. The original Broadway Jersey Boys cast members return to College Station in The Midtown Men: Holiday Hits (Dec. 3), decking the halls with iconic 1960s rock 'n' roll hits plus great holiday classics. The series closes with a high-energy musical celebration of contemporary a cappella conceived and arranged by Deke Sharon, vocal producer of the smash-hit film Pitch Perfect. Rocking out onstage are internationally renowned singing groups plus American Idol’s Blake Lewis. Get ready for A Cappella Live (Feb. 13). Tickets for each Singular Sensation offering range from $22-$60.
One additional Family Fun production in Rudder Theatre brings Bob Cratchit, Tiny Tim, three ghosts, and Ebenezer Scrooge to the stage in a musical version of A Christmas Carol (two performances of Dec. 8). The fun-for-all-ages event is on sale with tickets ranging from $20-$40. Blue Bell Ice Cream sponsors this Family Fun special event.
OPAS programs are made possible in part through Hotel Tax Revenue funded from the city of College Station through the Arts Council of Brazos Valley. For more information about all of the events coming to the new OPAS season, visit www.MSCOPAS.org.
