There’s hardly anything sweeter than a free bite of breakfast, especially when that free bite of breakfast comes in the form of a donut from Shipley Do-Nuts. In celebration of National Donut Day, local Shipley Do-Nuts stores have teamed up with the Salvation Army to provide free donuts to the Bryan College Station community on June 1 from 6-10am.
Established by The Salvation Army in 1938, National Donut Day is held annually on the first Friday in June to honor the Donut Lassies who served the sweet treats to soldiers on the frontlines of World War I.
For more than a century, The Salvation Army has been celebrating the Donut Lassies. The Salvation Army Donut Lassies are often credited with popularizing the sweet treat in the United States when the troops returned home from war. The donut now serves as a symbol of the services and comfort The Salvation Army provides to more than 23 million people each year.
To commemorate the day, The Salvation Army B/CS will host a “Do Good Donut Day” serving the small, sugary symbol of hope to the B/CS community at all Shipley Do-Nut Bryan and College Station locations.
One free glazed donut will be given to customers while supplies last. Salvation Army Red Kettles will be set up at each shop throughout the weekend to collect donations for local Salvation Army programs. Those who enjoy a donut on National Donut Day are asked to share a picture to their social media profiles using #GivingIsSweet. Proceeds from all donut sales on National Donut Day go toward the various Salvation Army B/CS programs serving the local community.
