The Arts Council, in collaboration with the City of Navasota, has introduced two new Navasota Artists in Residence to the Brazos Valley. Jessice Orfe and Heidi Pitre moved to the historic Horlock House in Navasota in early March, where they joined Lisa Urban. Lisa was invited to extend her residency and will continue to live, work, and manage the gallery space at the Horlock Art Galleries with Jessica and Heidi. These artists will live and work in Navasota through August 2015, refining their skills and making connections in the community to local artists and collectors.
The gallery, located on the first floor of the Horlock House, is open to the public Wednesday through Sunday, 9am-6pm . The artists will also contribute to a blog andFacebook page, allowing the community to follow their progress during the residency. The Horlock House is located at 1215 E. Washington Avenue in Navasota.
The community is also invited to an Open House on Saturday, May 30 from 2:30-5pm . Enjoy refreshments from The Filling Station Diner & Café, live music from Mitch White & Friends, and a chance to see what the Artists in Residence have been working on.
Jessica Orfe is a talented artist from Oahu, HI. She holds a BA in Studio Art from the University of Chicago, a Post-Baccalaureate from the School of the Art Institute, and an MFA in Painting & Drawing from the University of Hawai’i at Manoa. Jessica’s art is inspired by nature, and during her residency Jessica hopes to create a new series reflecting the flora and fauna of Navasota. Jessica also enjoys community collaboration and looks forward to incorporating the history and stories of Navasota in her work.
Heidi Pitre is an accomplished painter from New Orleans, LA, and holds a BFA from the University of New Orleans and an AA from Delgado New Orleans. During her residency Heidi will create a new series of work in her distinctive style, drawing upon childhood memories and improving her oil painting technique.
Lisa Urbanis an experienced artist from Salina, Kansas. She earned her BFA from Kansas State University, with an emphasis in Drawing and Painting. Lisa is inspired by fiber and surrealism, and looks to children’s cartoon for compositional arrangements.
