Capitalizing on the success of November’s downtown cabaret featuring Bryan Batt, OPAS will present Broadway’s Next H!T Musical on First Friday, March 6, at Downtown 202 (202 South Bryan Avenue). The entirely improvised musical comedy has been a favorite of NYC’s Off-Broadway scene. When not touring the country, the hilarious troupe performs regularly at Stage 72 at the Triad on NYC’s Upper West Side. A very limited number of tickets are on sale now at the MSC Box Office (979) 845-1234 . Tickets will also be available at www.MSCOPAS.org.
Under the artistic direction of improv veterans Rob Schiffman and Deb Rabbai, the hilarious Broadway’s Next H!T Musical is the only unscripted theatrical awards show. Master improvisers gather made up, hit song suggestions from the audience and create a spontaneous evening of music, humor, and laughter. The audience votes for its favorite song and watches as the cast turns it into a full-blown improvised musical - complete with memorable characters, witty dialogue, and plot twists galore. BNHM has been seen recently at The Triad, Tribeca Film Festival, and at the New York Musical Theater Festival, among many others. TheaterWeek hailed the show as “brilliant”, The New York Times described it as “hilarious” and The New York Post called Broadway’s Next H!T Musical “remarkable.”
OPAS Executive Director Anne Black states, “Our first foray into programming for the First Friday Downtown scene was exciting, adventurous and, as you might expect, a bit challenging. The audience had a wonderful time in November with Bryan Batt – some calling the evening one of their favorite memories in recent OPAS history. Keeping that in mind, we were elated to discover this program because it will work perfectly in the intimate Downtown 202 setting this spring. This show is fun, hilarious and completely improvised. In fact, the musical that will be performed on March 6 will be entirely written by our audience that night!”
Downtown Bryan Association Executive Director Sandy Farris says, “We are thrilled to welcome OPAS back to Downtown Bryan for First Friday in March. We think this type of OPAS production and Downtown Bryan are a natural fit. This type of event fits the venue perfectly and represents the type of activity that helped to earn Downtown Bryan's designation as one of the state's newest Cultural District cities from the Texas Commission on the Arts. The First Friday atmosphere combined with the Downtown shops and restaurants makes attending this OPAS event the perfect night out.”
