The soul of the Spanish guitar, Pablo Sáinz Villegas, is coming to Rudder Theatre for one-night-only on Monday, March 26, at 7:30pm. The program for his recital includes works by Heitor Villa-Lobos and Luis Bonfá as well as selections from “West Side Story” by Leonard Bernstein. Pablo Sáinz Villegas has been acclaimed by the international press as "the soul of the Spanish guitar" and as the most outstanding classical guitarist of his generation. The New York Times has recognized his "virtuous and moving interpretation." He has an outstanding artistic career for his emotional delivery on stage, which he achieves either in recitals in intimate rooms or before more than 85,000 people accompanying the admired tenor Plácido Domingo, at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium in Madrid.
He has performed at venues such as the Carnegie Hall in New York, the Philharmonie in Berlin, and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. He is frequently invited as a soloist to different festivals, symphonic and philharmonic orchestras, including the National Orchestra of Spain, and the Philharmonic of Israel, Bergen, and Denmark. In the American continent he has played with the Symphony Orchestras of New York, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Peru, Colombia, and Panama.
He was born in Spain, a country in which his instrument has deep roots. In his native region of La Rioja, Sáinz Villegas began taking guitar lessons at the young age of six, giving his first concert when he was only seven years old. During his career he has won more than 30 international awards, including the Arts Award of La Rioja, the Segovia award he won at age 15, and the Gold Medal at the Christopher Parkening International Competition.
