The Blinn College District’s wind symphony and choirs will present Sounds of the Season, a musical tribute to the holiday season, on Friday, Dec. 17, in the Festival Institute Concert Hall in Round Top.
Tickets are $10 and available at blinn.edu/boxoffice and will be available for digital purchase at the door.
The 6 p.m. concert will feature performances by Blinn’s instrumental and vocal students, faculty, and special alumni guests under the direction of Band Director Dr. Sarah Burke and Choir Director Dr. Paulo Gomes.
“We are delighted to return to the world-renowned Festival Institute Concert Hall and share the outstanding talents of our students, faculty, and alumni with the entire community,” Gomes says.
The performance will feature classical Christmas carols, including African Noel; Veni Domine; Carol of the Bells; the world premiere of Lux by Assistant Band Director Dr. Kendall Prinz; Brightest and Best; The First Noel; Gesù Bambino, and Let There Be Christmas. The show will close with a singalong medley of everyone’s holiday favorites.
“This concert has quickly established itself as one of the highlights of our performance calendar, and we are very excited to bring it back and once again welcome our audience to one of the most beautiful concert halls in the nation,” Burke says.
Festival Institute Concert Hall, which opened for performances in 1983, is acclaimed for the exceptional acoustics in its 1,000-seat concert hall.
During the concert, Blinn will celebrate the life of late vocal music instructor Dr. Soo Yeon Kim, who passed away in August 2020. Kim’s 30-year career teaching music included roles at Nazareth College, Wartburg College, and Blinn. She also taught students across all ages at her private studio in Katy.
Kim was a leading lyric-coloratura soprano with many opera companies across the United States and Europe and was a winner of the prestigious Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions and the San Francisco Opera and Bel Canto competitions.
A scholarship fund has been established in Kim’s honor and the Blinn College Foundation is accepting donations at foundation.blinn.edu/pages/general-donation-form.
