When Allied operations stormed the beaches of Normandy on June 6, 1944 (D-Day), General Eisenhower never had a second plan nor did he expect anything less than victory. Germany’s Field Marshal Rommel was defending France’s coastline and knew “for the Allies and Germany it will be the longest day.” Loss of human lives on both sides was very high. Camp Hearne honors those service men and women and the civilian lives lost during this critical operation by remembering this special day in world history.
Camp Hearne will hold an Open House this Saturday, June 10, to remember the events of 73 years ago on the beaches of Normandy. Drop by Camp Hearne Historic Site west of Hearne from 11am to 4pm. There is no charge for visiting one of Texas’ unique World War II historic sites.
Visit with Camp Hearne’s living historians and experience a day in the life of a WWII soldier. The Allies are well represented with a Russian soldier sharing his knowledge of Russian weapons and gear used on the Eastern front. Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery will also display British gear used in fighting for freedom and liberty.
The major exhibitor will display the U.S. Army Signal Corps equipment and gear used to document and communicate on the battlefield. A cornucopia of amazing WWII objects used to conduct U.S. military operations in Europe.
You will also be able to visit the WWII POW Camp Exhibit and walk the trails to prisoner-built remains.
