On September 9, "Remembering Our Fallen" will come to the Museum of the American GI in College Station. "Remembering Our Fallen" is a photographic memorial of service men and women who died fighting in the War on Terror.
Created in November 2010 by Bill and Evonne Williams of Omaha, Nebraska, the memorial was inspired by a grieving father. The father reported that four years after his son’s death in Iraq, his pain was greater because he felt his son had been forgotten before the war was even over. In response, the Williams developed "Remembering Our Fallen," with a specific memorial to represent the men and women of each state they called home. They decided that they specifically wanted the memorial to be mobile, so that instead of forcing people to travel to it, the memorial would travel to them, ensuring that friends, families, and others could pay their respects. Each memorial is also considered to be a living memorial, meaning additions are made as new names are added to the list. The Texas memorial currently displays the names and images of 610 Texan men and women. The timing of the memorial’s arrival to the Museum of the American GI will coincide with the 15th anniversary of September 11th, making it especially significant.
The exhibit will be on display at the Museum of the American G.I. from September 9 to 14 from 10am to 5pm daily. There will be a special reception and preview Thursday, September 8, starting at 6pm. This will be followed by the showing of the documentary, Hornet's Nest at 7:30pm. Entry to the museum will be free during these days.
