The Stark Galleries will host former close friends of E.M. “Buck” Schiwetz, who will discuss the artist’s career through reminiscences and memorabilia from their days together. The event will be held, Wednesday, August 6, from noon to 1:30pm. Lunch will be provided. Registration is required and serves as an RSVP.
Special guests will pay homage to the artist through pictures and memorabilia and include: Jerry Cooper, former editor of The Texas Aggie 1971 – 2002; Sharon Steen, friend and confidant; and, Pat Nelson, daughter of the artist.
Edward “Buck” Schiwetz was born in Cuero, Texas, on August 24, 1898. As a young child, Schiwetz was known for disappearing for hours at a time around his hometown, only to be found sketching homes, buildings, and vehicles. Schiwetz dreamed of attending art school, however his father insisted that he join the Corps of Cadets and pursue a career in engineering at Texas A&M. Throughout his career, overcoming many obstacles to his art, Schiwetz traveled extensively throughout Texas. Best known for sketching small-town, vernacular architecture and his representations of TAMU Campus, Schiwetz went on to win many awards, and was the Official State Artist of Texas for 1978-1979. He was also chosen as the artist-in-residence at Texas A&M University at the centennial celebration in 1976.
