SEAD Gallery and Bookshop is excited to present “Art Appreciation”, a three-week course about understanding and enjoying art as part of the SEAD After Dark series. Jenn Korolenko, the curator of education at Forsyth Galleries at Texas A&M University, and Heather Ann Bennett, collections manager at the Forsyth Galleries at Texas A&M University, will be facilitating classes that range from art history to destroying art museums. “Art Appreciation” will be held on three separate nights, Jan. 23, Jan. 30, and Feb. 6, all from 7 to 9pm. SEAD After Dark is a facilitated gathering and an opportunity to learn and discuss right here in your community. Valuing small groups in a more intimate setting, the SEAD Gallery and Bookshop hosts knowledgeable members of the community to present engaging ideas to be discussed between friends over snacks and wine. Informal but informative, SEAD After Dark is a place to think, challenge, and discover.
The first class, “What Makes it ART?” will be held on Jan. 23. It questions and expands the view of what art can be, focusing on what makes art to be considered art. This session will contain audio, visuals and guided discussion by Jenn Korolenko. The second course, held on Jan. 30, is called “Art History for People in a Hurry” by Jenn Korolenko and will discuss the thousands of years of creativity, condensed into 90 min. A crash course on art history, these 90 minutes will be interactive and fast paced. The third and final course on Feb. 6, “To Trust Visitors or Not to Trust Visitors, That is the Question…” will be facilitated by Heather Ann Bennett, and will focus on museums and the precious work we place inside of them.
Jenn Korolenko is the Curator of Education at Forsyth Galleries at Texas A&M. She holds degrees in studio art and art education, and is a working artist herself. Before joining UART at Texas A&M, Jenn was an Education Associate at Grounds For Sculpture in Hamilton, New Jersey; her early career was in K through 12 classrooms. She has been working and teaching in art museums for more than a decade.
The second speaker, Heather Ann Bennett, currently serves as the collections manager at the Forsyth Galleries at Texas A&M. She received her Master of Art in museums studies and collections management from the University College London in London, England. Prior to working at Texas A&M, Heather was a collections assistant at the Imperial War Museum in London and has been working with nonprofits and art dealers for almost 20 years.
