SEAD Gallery & Bookshop will host local author Ron Newton as he discusses and signs copies of his book, “Light of her Children,” on Nov. 9 from 6:30 to 8pm.
Ron Newton’s memoir “Light of her Children” depicts his family’s hardships growing up, along with the growth and strength that resulted from their tribulations. The book describes Ron’s childhood with 20 siblings through his coming of age in rural Northeastern Colorado as the Great Depression, World War II, and the 1950s unfolded. Following several generations of the Newton family, “Light of her Children” provides insight into history unwinding in this small Colorado town lodged in the Rocky Mountains as its community chases the American dream during a time when it feels unattainable. Readers will experience Newton’s personal narrative of trials during this harsh time in history and in his family, as well as witness the way his relationships with other people and institutions in the community ultimately shaped him.
“Light of her Children” remains relevant to today’s society as it touches on government welfare support for the poor and mentally ill. Newton brings insight and humanity to this issue, addressing them with empathy. His novel inspires the reader, as his family rises from poverty with help from both the government and the community.
Ron Newton was born in Mead, Colorado. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree from the University of Northern Colorado, a master’s degree from the University of Utah, and a doctorate from Texas A&M University. Once enrolled at Texas A&M in 1966, Ron and his wife, Mary, embraced Bryan College Station as their new home. He then taught at Texas A&M for more than 30 years, as well as conducted research on the physiology and biochemistry of crop plants and trees. His research resulted in 90 refereed journal articles and six co-edited books, with more than 4.5 million dollars in financial support. Newton is now retired and lives in Coppell with his wife Mary.
Along with Newton’s signing at the SEAD Gallery and Bookshop, he will also make an appearance at Christopher’s World Grille on Nov. 10 from 11am to 1pm.
