Grand Stafford presents the Second Sunday Foreign Film, featuring a showing of “The Pope’s Toilet” Sunday, November 8 at 3pm.
Since the film’s release in 2007, “The Pope’s Toilet” has received plenty of praise for its funny yet heartbreaking storyline about a small town in South America preparing for the Pope’s visit.
Released in 2007 in South America and in 2009 in the United States, “The Pope’s Toilet” tells the story of Pope John Paul II who visits Melo, Uruguay, a small town on the Brazilian border. The poor citizens of Melo, including the main character Beto, come up with many different ways to make money off of the thousands of pilgrims that are expected to flock to the town to see the Pope. Beto comes up with, “The Pope’s Toilet” a place where pilgrims, for a small fee, can find relief.
After the film’s release, “The Pope’s Toilet” received praise from movie critics in both South America and the States. The film was nominated for 2 awards at Cannes Film Festival in 2007 and won 3 awards at the Gramado Film Festival in 2007. After its release, it was nominated and won many more awards at film festivals across South America. “The Pope’s Toilet” premiered on British television in August of 2010 and was received extremely well by British viewers.
