Saint Michael’s Episcopal School will present the operettas “Cox and Box” and “No Cards” February 20 and 21.
The first performance will be held at 6 p.m. Tickets are $35 and include a gala dinner and lecture given by guest speaker Ralph MacPhail. RSVP required. Saturday, the school will give a free performance at 2 p.m. and again at 7 p.m. The evening performance costs $12 for adults and $6 for children.
“Cox and Box,” by Sir Arthur Sullivan, is a one-act musical about a scheming landlord. As Mr. Cox is out all day and Mr. Box is out all night, the landlord sees a capital opportunity to rent the same room out to both and make twice the money.
“No Cards,” by Sir W.S. Gilbert, centers around the young heiress Miss Annabella Penrose as she is pursued by the two suitors. The suitors must jump through many hoops to overcome a legal situation, which would keep the charming Miss Penrose from marrying one of them.
Each year students, grades five through 12, participate in a Gilbert and Sullivan production. With the goal of fostering teamwork and creativity, students are instrumental in all aspects of the show. Some students take to the stage to sing, act, and dance, while others assist with sound, lighting, set design and construction, and T-shirt design.
