The Brazos Valley Symphony Orchestra’s 33rd season finale performance will be Sunday, April 26, in Rudder Theatre.
This classical subscription concert entitled “Civil War Tribute” will present the orchestra performing works from Bilik, Williams, Copland, and more, and feature Brigadier General Joe E. Ramirez narrating Lincoln Portrait. This concert is a tribute to the 150th anniversary of the end of the American Civil War and the musical program will capture its spirit through works from modern composers and film scores. Concertgoers may recognize the beautiful Ashokan Farewell by Jay Ungar as the musical backdrop played throughout Ken Burns’ PBS series, The Civil War. The BVSO will perform selections of John Williams’ Oscar-nominated original score from the 2012 movie Lincoln and the symphonic suite from the 1993 movie Gettysburg will close the concert in patriotic fashion.

The BVSO is very pleased to have the one and only Commandant of the Texas A&M University Corps of Cadets, Brigadier General Ramirez, to narrate the evening’s featured work, Copland’s Lincoln Portrait. BVSS Executive Director, Mary Koeninger explains how this came about:
“When Marcelo decided to do Lincoln Portrait as part of this Civil War themed concert, I knew immediately that General Ramirez would be the perfect person for the narration. I knew he had a music background having played in the Aggie Band and I knew he was a fan of the BVSO. General Ramirez was gracious enough to meet with Marcelo and me to discuss him possibly being our narrator. We were overwhelmed and extremely honored when he agreed to perform with us! How incredible that someone who has served his country so honorably would be a part of our concert. We can hardly wait to perform with General Ramirez. This will be a once in a lifetime event that we at the BVSO will point to with great pride for many years to come."
This is BVSO patrons’ last chance to enjoy the final free pre-concert talk of the season one hour prior to the performance in the Rudder Theatre Complex. Ann Thompson, a popular lecturer with the Houston Grand Opera, will again present her delightful and witty insights into the composers, the history, and meaning behind the music. Then after the concert, the patron social hour at Napa Flats will keep the enjoyment going to top off an exquisite evening of culture and entertainment. The Maestro and General Ramirez are scheduled to attend as well.
