Five tremendous brass musicians — each a virtuoso in his own right — form the legendary Canadian Brass. With an international reputation as one of the most popular brass ensembles today, Canadian Brass has truly earned the distinction of “the world’s most famous brass group” in their 40-year long history. The varied Canadian Brass repertoire features brass standards as well as a wide-ranging library of original arrangements created especially for them. These include the works of Renaissance and Baroque masters, Classical works, marches, holiday favorites, ragtime, Dixieland, Latin, jazz, big band, Broadway and Christian music as well as popular songs and standards.
With a discography of over 100 albums and an extensive world-wide touring schedule, Canadian Brass is an important pioneer in bringing brass music to mass audiences everywhere. About Friends of Chamber Music Concerts
The Bryan College Station community valued the University Chamber Concerts (UCC), which was an outstanding series of classical chamber music concerts held in Rudder Theater at Texas A&M University (TAMU). The UCC concerts were made possible by the dedicated efforts of Werner Rose, pianist and faculty member of the TAMU Music Program. When the Music Program faculty decided in the spring of 1996 to discontinue the concert series, Thyra Plass, Gilbert Plass, and William Rogers resolved to support the concerts and schedule them at local venues. Friends of Chamber Music (FCM), the support group for the new series of classical chamber music concerts, Community Chamber Concerts (CCC), was thereby created. FCM became a tax-exempt corporation in November 1997 and scheduled concerts at First Presbyterian Church in Bryan, Texas. Other concert venues have been Bush Conference Center (co-sponsored by the Department of Performance Studies at TAMU), St. Thomas Episcopal Church, and Rudder Theater.
Throughout its history, FCM has been an all-volunteer organization and FCM members perform most of the activities associated with arranging and holding the concerts and other events. FCM founders believed that learning from our cultural heritage is important, and that everyone in our community can benefit from opportunities to experience the intimate and charged atmosphere of chamber music concerts. Because of the importance of the arts within education, FCM has accompanied each concert with one or more extra cost-free events in which the guest artists bring their music to the people in K through 12 and university classroom presentations. In a typical season, FCM has reached around 2,000 people in concerts and an additional 400 to 1000 people in the extra-concert events.
