Two local businesses were chosen from among several nominees as “Grimes County Small Business of the Year” at the Small Business Forum co-hosted by the Chambers of Commerce in Navasota Grimes County, Burleson County, and Brenham/Washington County.
For the smaller category, with under 25 employees, Taqueria La Escondida was recognized for their tremendous growth achieved over the past two years, along with their consistent community participation.
“We are proud to have them in our community and congratulate Taqueria La Escondida,” says Johnny McNally, executive director of the Chamber of Commerce.
In the larger category of 25 employees or greater, Mid-South Synergy received the award due in part to their community involvement.
“They are involved in every community and youth activity in Grimes County," McNally says. "That sounds impossible, but trust me when I say it is accurate.” He further elaborated that Mid-South’s primary responsibility is to provide power to thousands of Grimes County residents. “In this capacity, they have an excellent reputation for customer service and dependability.”
Speakers at the Small Business Forum included Matt Prochaska, president and CEO of the Brazos Valley Economic Development Corporation. Prochaska gave an insightful look at the region’s workforce travel patterns and sectors experiencing interest in our region, and efforts to train our youth for the jobs that are expected to accompany the growth.
He was followed by John Romero from the Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service. Mr. Romero provided a sobering look at the vulnerabilities all businesses can face with cybersecurity and social engineering.
Other topics covered at the event included disaster preparedness, business succession planning, and a detailed look at cardiovascular disease by Dr. Nathan Bryan of Baylor College of Medicine.
