Communications Professor James Cho’s ‘BCS to Broadway and Back: The Randy Wilson Story’ will run Nov. 9, 10, and 13
A Blinn College District professor will see his documentary come to life on the big screen with a special screening at the newly restored Queen Theatre in Downtown Bryan.
BCS to Broadway and Back: The Randy Wilson Story, a feature-length documentary co-produced by Communications Professor James Cho, is set to premiere at the Queen Theatre at 110 South Main Street in Bryan. Show times are 7pm Friday, Nov. 9, and Tuesday, Nov. 13, and 1:30pm Saturday, Nov. 10.
The film is based on the life of local Theatre Director and Broadway Alum Randy Wilson. A performer with The Theatre Company since 2013, Cho teamed with fellow Actor and Music Director Cynthia Bradford to create the documentary for local audiences.
“Cynthia and I were chatting one day about how our friend, Randy Wilson, had such an interesting life, and how it would be great if we could document these stories in some way and share them with the community,” Cho says. “That is when we decided to develop a film project about his life.”
The late Wilson was a graduate of Stephen F. Austin High School in Bryan and Baylor University in Waco before moving to New York City in 1970. From 1971 to 1978, Wilson performed in the Broadway productions of Rockabye Hamlet and Jesus Christ Superstar.
After several years of performing, writing, and eventually earning his master’s degree from Baylor, Wilson returned to Bryan to assume the role of artistic director with The Theatre Company, where he spent nearly 25 years directing numerous productions, including West Side Story, Tarzan, and Fiddler on the Roof. In addition to directing and performing, Wilson wrote several musicals, including Taking Liberty and The Heart of the Valley, which highlights the history of Bryan College Station.
The documentary will feature personal interviews with Wilson gathered before his passing in November 2016.
“This entire process has been such a community effort,” Cho says. “So many individuals were very generous with their time and resources to help make this production possible. Randy made such an impact on this community, so it is very fitting to screen this film at the iconic Queen Theatre.”
Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at http://tickets.queenbryantx.com/tickets.
A screening of the 1973 film Jesus Christ Superstar will follow the Friday showing, and is included in the ticket price.
