The Trafficking and Exploitation Action Network, in partnership with the Brazos Valley Council of Governments, will be hosting the Inaugural Human Trafficking & Exploitation Action Conference Speaker Series on Tuesday, Jan. 15, at the BVCOG located at 3991 E 29th St, Bryan.
The goal of the conference speaker series is to address the immense scope of issues related to all forms of human trafficking, and discuss how our community is banding together to end human trafficking and sexual exploitation across the Brazos Valley, state of Texas, and the world.
The conference gives community members and professionals an opportunity to learn valuable information about issues and social injustices relating to human trafficking in all forms, sexual exploitation, trauma-related care, and so much more. Workshops will include:
- "Who wants to talk about abuse? No one! Addressing the intersections of epistemology and implicit bias in child abuse and sexual assault investigations," presented by Sgt. Jason Lundquist, Waco Police Department
- "Swipe Right: Identifying Sex Trafficking on Tinder," presented by Katie Watson, T.E.A.N. Board of Directors and Lifeworks
- "Internet Safety 101: Sex Trafficking," presented by Stacy Hill and Ellie Truan, Crisis Center of Comal County
- "Crossroads: Navigating the Intersections of Human Trafficking & Domestic Violence," presented by Q. Olivia Rivers, The Bridge Over Troubled Waters, Inc.
- “Something Isn’t Quite Right: Identifying Sex Traffic Victims in the Emergency Room and Addressing their Health Needs," presented by Dr. Nancy Downing and Niki Johnson, Baylor Scott and White Hospital
While getting an in-depth look at action that is being taken in the Brazos Valley and the state of Texas, audience members will gain insight into protocol development, education and outreach opportunities, and victim services and resources available throughout the state and nationwide to aid in ending human trafficking and exploitation.
The conference is being held from 8:30am to 5pm, with check-in beginning at 8am at the BVCOG. As seating is limited, participants must register here.
