There is nothing like the smell of bacon and coffee in the a.m. to stop you from hitting that snooze button. Putting those two together is a recipe for a great start to the day; mix that with a breakfast fundraiser and you’re in for an amazing morning! Habitat for Humanity put the fun in fundraiser on Wednesday, February 28 at the College Station Hilton Hotel in the Bluebonnet Ballroom.
Among some of the speakers were KBTX’s Karla Castillo, who anchors Brazos Valley This Morning on KBTX from 4:30 to 7 a.m. weekdays, and Mikado Hinson, director of football player development at Texas A&M University, who brought bright energies to the ballroom especially at such an early start.
“I’m sorry if I bring too much energy this morning,” Karla said. “When you wake up at 1:45 a.m. every morning, [7:30 a.m.] is lunch”.
Luis Saldivar and Maria Solis-Saldivar are the future owners of the 314th Habitat for Humanity home in the Bryan-College Station community. The two are immigrants from Mexico who have raised their children here in the BCS and even had their daughter graduate from Texas A&M. He and his wife said they are beyond grateful for the opportunity to be homeowners.
“Es un sueño,” [it is a dream,] said the Saldivars. “Sí tienes faith, todo es posible. El señor hace posible lo imposible. Dios los bendiga.” [If you have faith, anything is possible. The Lord makes possible what is impossible. Bless all of you].
The Saldivars speech during the breakfast moved several members of the audience and even had some attendees in tears. Though the speech was delivered in Spanish, the message still held strong within the room: Habitat for Humanity needs to stay around to help people like Luis and Maria. With funding from these breakfasts, Habitat for Humanity can still do what they have been doing for hundreds of families.
Mikado finished the breakfast off with a call to service from the attendees to donate and help keep the organization alive and thriving to help the people of the BCS community.
With Karla’s rambunctious emceeing, the Saldivar’s heartfelt thank you, and Mikado’s call to service, the morning went by as fast as it came with many individuals staying after the events were complete to network and speak with other individuals who attended the fundraiser.
